After sixteen years of sitting in the passenger seat on test day, we've learned that passing is rarely about talent. It's about preparation, routine and avoiding a handful of classic mistakes. Here are the ten tips we give every Steerwise learner.
1–3: Before you even start the car
Adjust everything twice. Examiners notice when you skip mirror and seat checks. Make them obvious — narrate what you're doing. Know your controls blindfolded (figuratively): wipers, lights, defroster and hazards should be muscle memory. And arrive early with paperwork ready — permit, ID and booking confirmation in one folder.
4–7: The moves that decide it
Exaggerate your mirror-signal-manoeuvre routine so the examiner can see it. At stop signs, stop fully behind the line — rolling stops are the number-one instant fail we see. Keep both hands on the wheel except when changing gear or signaling, and hold a steady, legal speed: too slow reads as uncertain, too fast reads as dangerous.
8–10: Mindset on the day
Treat the examiner like a sat-nav with a clipboard. Follow instructions, don't chat, don't apologize excessively. If you make a small mistake, let it go instantly — one error never fails anyone, but dwelling on it causes three more. Finally, book a warm-up hour right before your slot so you're already driving smoothly when the test begins.
"The learners who pass first time aren't the most talented. They're the most rehearsed."
The single best preparation is a full mock test on real exam routes — which is exactly what our Road Test Preparation package is built around. You've got this.
